Many standards have been developed within food safety: specific company standards, legal regulations, as well as standards developed by retailers. Their proliferation made their application difficult. At the same time, food safety principles have spread across the world. The safety of foodstuffs has become a major issue for all players in the food chain.
A single standard with worldwide reach, and including the food safety principles, thus became necessary. This was the reason ISO developed and released ISO 22000:2005 Food Safety Management System in 2005. There are number of technical standards and guidelines in the series of ISO 22000 and published to facilitate the industry for effective food safety management system.
ISO 22000:2005 is best standard to integrate other management system concepts like Quality, Environment and Occupational Health and Safety. The design of ISO 22000 is very much in lined with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAHS 18001.
